The Beauty of Slowing Down

It was the least planned of all my trips, but it taught me to slow down, to appreciate time passing, to let my feet take me wherever they wanted, whether to schools, markets, dead-end alleys, or even a funeral.

I realised that simple things can become incredibly complex.

I learned what it means to live in community, where there’s no mine or yours, everything is ours.

I saw firsthand the impact that tourism and tourists have on such a small island.

I saw rubbish heaps where every brand was Portuguese, beers, juices, wines, brought in to satisfy our wants but left behind, hidden only by the lushness of nature.

I came back angry at myself.
